The chick, named Kindara, was born at the
Rainbow Springs Kiwi Encounter in Rotorua
and has been in care until reaching a stoat-proof

Girdlestone, the pointy peak above Turoa
skifield
, is one of 16 place names linked to World
War 1 that are set to become official as part of
the New Zealand Geographic Board’s WW1
centennial programme.
The peak is named for Hubert Earle Girdlestone
who worked as a surveyor for the Lands and
Survey Department and was killed in action in
France in 1918.
The Tararua Tramping Club in 1922 installed a
plaque on the peak which was originally known
as the Little Matterhorn.
The Ruapehu area
is providing locations for
a movie adaptation of a Barry Crump novel, the
Ruapehu Bulletin reports.
The film, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, is based on
Wild Pork and Watercress.
Sam Neill plays the lead in the cast of Taika
Waititi’s film, with Stan Walker and Rhys Darby
also part of the troupe.
The deadline for the September Bulletin will be
Friday August 14th
. All items should be with the
Editor in Wellington by that date.
