DOC said it is an offence to travel off formed roads
and tracks under the National Park bylaws, and this
could attract a fne oF up to $500.
There are seven signs along the 4WD track the family

A climber was hit by a 100kg tumbling boulder just
below the summit of
Mt Ngauruhoe
. It is likely that the
rock was disturbed by his fancée who was above him.
A member of the
Ruapehu Alpine Rescue
Organisation (RARO)
team was winched onto the
crater rim from a helicopter and he scrambled 100 metres
down to the man.
The climber, From Britain and aged 26, was ±own
frst to Soda Springs and then to Rotorua Hospital. He
suffered leg injuries after nearly being hit in the head.
One of the stream valleys draining from near the
Te
Maari crater at Mt Tongariro
±ooded recently, creating
lahar-like conditions in the valley.
Debris (sand, clay and rock) left over from the 2012
eruptions was remobilised by heavy local rainfall and
washed out of the valley. Minor damage was done to
a walking track.
