President's Update September 23rd, 2021

Kia ora koutou

Hello everyone. While it's good news that Auckland has moved to level three, what we're really looking forward to is being able to get down to the mountain again! Fingers and toes crossed that we'll be moving to Level Two a few days into the School Holidays, on the 6th October!

Of course having the proposed change from Level 3 to Level 2 happen in the first week of the holidays will impact on people who are booked in for that week. We've been working hard to come up with some options so that if you are affected by this you'll still be able to get your week's skiing in.

If you're an Aucklander booked in for the first week of the School Holidays Ceana will ring you to re-organise your booking.

In the meantime, if you're in level 3 or 4 and have a booking before the School Holidays please cancel your booking yourself online. This makes it a lot easier for Ceana to ensure you get a full credit.

We still have spaces available in the Lodge and Chalet for the first week of the holidays, and space in the Chalet and Turoa for the second week.

There is a waitlist now in place for unpaid and new group bookings between 6 – 9 October at Turoa. For members who have booked but haven’t paid; if space becomes available, bookings will be accepted in order from the earliest date they were received.

With the holidays falling later in October this year our lower mountain buildings are a great choice. Turoa often has great snow later in the season, and at Whakapapa we understand from RAL that the Rangatira will close for the season after the first week of the holidays, assuming the Rockgarden remains skiable that long. Staying in the Chalet means you can drive to the door, and in the morning drive up to the Top of the Bruce, park and jump straight on the Gondola without having to first walk down the Rockgarden (and walk up it again at the end of the day!). And of course on days the slopes are closed there are hot pools to visit, tracks to explore and a whole range of activities in reach to entertain your family!

Our Covid Protocols while staying at RSC

We will run our buildings at our Level Two protocols until the whole of New Zealand is in Level One.
For the latest COVID-19 protocols, visit the members’ area on www.rsc.org.nz which we will update with any changes.

Our Booking Cancellation Policy During Covid

  • Please make all your bookings, and especially cancellations for dates while you are in level 4 or 3, through the website to ensure your refund is processed.
  • If you cancel because you are unwell, you will not be charged a cancellation fee.
  • Auckland based members cannot stay at club buildings until the city is at Alert Level 2.
  • During the October school holidays, the two-week cancellation policy will be reduced to 48 hours.
  • Important: Please check online to ensure you have cancelled any future bookings that you won’t be using, to allow space for other members to stay.

Win a Creatista Pro!

To help fund the on-mountain machines, we are raffling a really fancy Nespresso machine - the Creatista Pro.

The raffle was to be drawn on the Club Champs weekend which has now had to be cancelled. We'll be coming back to you with a new date for the draw, so there's still time to get your tickets, support your club, and enjoy a coffee at home. Tickets are 1 for $10, 2 for $20 or 8 for $50.

Buy your tickets here:

Walking to the Lodge

Here's a timely reminder from the Chalet and Lodge teams if you are walking to the Lodge at night or in dicey weather.

Please call ahead to let someone at the Lodge know you are on your way. You won't be pestering anyone with the call, and they can keep an eye out for your arrival.

They can also let you know what the weather is like. As you all know the weather can be fine at Top of the Bruce but completely closed in at Hut Flat.

This is super important for both new and long-standing members. Things can quickly go wrong on the mountain.

And the same applies when you are heading back down to the car park, phone up to the lodge when you get there. Safety first everyone. Phone: 07 892 3824

For some good mountain safety reminders, check out www.rsc.org.nz/house-rules

RAL Offer to Aucklanders with Season Passes

RAL has just announced that anyone in Auckland and Northland who is unable to use their season pass more than four times this season, will be offered a 50% credit toward a 2022 season pass. This credit will be applied to your Mt Ruapehu profile and be able to be redeemed online when they open their 2022 season pass campaign on Friday 22 October. We've put the whole press release on our public fb page - facebook.com/groups/RuapehuSkiClub

Summer bookings are open

Don't miss grabbing a bunk at the Chalet or Turoa for summer adventures. There's plenty to do while the white stuff isn't around; Tongariro Crossing, biking the Ohakune Old Coach Road and Bridge to Nowhere and of course, beautiful day walks near Whakapapa Village including Tama Lakes. And all for the bargain price of $28 per night for members! Bring a guest, and they stay for just $33 per night.

But before summer...

there's still plenty of ski season left, and I look forward to seeing you at Ruapehu in our wonderful buildings!

Noho ora mai
Stay well, look after yourself,
