Visit to RSC’s birthplace – Waihohonu Hut

Did you know that Glacier Hut, below the lodge at Whakapapa, is not the original hut that RSC was founded from?

Waihohonu Hut, which had been built by the government in 1904, is the place that Bernard Drake and William (Bill) Mead tried skiing for the first time. After “a glorious run down for about a mile to the hut” they posted their notice at Waihohonu Hut of their intention to form a ski club.

We are planning a walk to Waihohonu Hut the birthplace of Ruapehu Ski Club on 18 Feb 2017.

The hut is a 14.5km walk from Whakapapa village (about 5 hours). The walk will go past the Taranaki Falls and the Tama lakes before going into the valley a new Waihohonu hut has been built for trampers. The original hut is across the valley. From here it is 6km to the desert road. There will be transport from the desert road to the Chalet.

If you are interested in joining us please book with Sheryl at the office. $25 members and $30 non members.

You will be contacted closer to the time regarding costs for the transport and what our plans are for food.
